This application note describes how to connect the MU Beta emulator to recent laptop (notebook) computers.

Problem:

Existing laptops (notebooks) lack the legacy parallel port or these contain a modified printer port which is dedicated for printers only and cannot be used with a proprietary communication protocols - like the one used by IDEA software to control the MU Beta emulator. Even the common USB to parallel converters do not help because they do not support non-printer protocols.

Solution:

Use a PCMCIA to parallel port card which is fully compatible with the legacy parallel port.

An example of such card is the EPP Parallel PCMCIA Card SPP-100 made by Quatech which is available in various computer shops.
